Hugh Nelson, 27, pleaded guilty at Bolton Crown Court on Friday. His charges involve trying to incite a minor to engage in a sexual act, distributing and creating indecent images, possessing prohibited images, and other related offences. Additionally, he admitted to sharing obscene material and distributing indecent "pseudo photographs" of children in July 2023. Sentencing is scheduled for 25 September.

Detective Constable Carly Baines of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) expressed deep concern over Nelson's actions, highlighting the disturbing nature of how he manipulated innocent photos of real children into inappropriate content. She emphasised that this case is unprecedented locally and holds significance on a national level.

Nelson, residing on Briggsfold Road in Bolton, engaged in explicit online conversations about children and shared the illicit images both freely and for payment, according to GMP. The investigation into his activities has had international implications, leading to arrests and safeguarding measures in various cities and countries worldwide.

Described as a "real test of legislation" by GMP, Detective Constable Baines hopes that this case will influence future laws due to the novel use of computer programs in such criminal activities, which are not explicitly addressed in current UK legislation.

Jeanette Smith from the Crown Prosecution Service condemned the misuse of evolving technology to produce such harmful material, highlighting the gravity of the crime. She pointed out that victims of previous abuse are being re-exploited through the recreation of abusive scenarios at the behest of individuals in the darker corners of the internet.

The National Crime Agency has previously underscored the significance of AI-generated abuse imagery, stating that viewing such content, whether real or AI-created, heightens the risk of offenders progressing to physically abusing children themselves.
