Malaysia Urges Microsoft and CrowdStrike to Consider Compensating for Global Outage Losses

Malaysia's digital minister is seeking compensation from Microsoft and CrowdStrike for the losses incurred during the global tech disruption. Various industries were disrupted as a result of a faulty update to CrowdStrike's security software. Companies and government agencies in Malaysia, such as airlines, finance, and healthcare, were affected.

Last Friday, the incident was precipitated by an error in CrowdStrike's security software update, which resulted in the system collapse of computers running Microsoft's Windows operating system. This resulted in pervasive internet service disruptions that affected a variety of industries.

Five government agencies and nine corporations in the aviation, banking, and healthcare sectors of Malaysia were among those affected, according to Minister Gobind Singh Deo. Gobind pursued a comprehensive report on the event and encouraged Microsoft and CrowdStrike to take action to prevent the recurrence of similar disruptions following discussions with their representatives.

Gobind stated, "If there are any damages or losses, where there have been any parties that have made such claims, I've asked them to consider those claims and see to what extent they are able to help resolve the issue." He also mentioned that the government would extend support where feasible, although the exact extent of the losses is yet to be quantified.

In response to the situation, the CEO of Malaysia's Capital A, the company operating budget airline AirAsia, emphasised that airlines affected by the IT disruption should receive compensation for their losses. Tony Fernandes highlighted the importance of accountability, stating, "The principle is that if we do something wrong, we have to compensate. We, other airlines, and other businesses lost a lot. They should offer us compensation, and right now, we have to wait and see," as reported by state news agency Bernama.
