Kazakhstan Uses Camera-Equipped Cats to Find Lost Pets

Kazakhstan has introduced a programme utilising free-roaming cats equipped with cameras and GPS trackers to aid in the search for missing pets. A project named GdeKotBot recruits these animals as volunteers, with artificial intelligence subsequently scanning their collected footage for lost animals. This expands an existing digital service connecting owners with spotters.

The initiative builds upon a digital service that uses a Telegram chatbot. This chatbot connects individuals who have lost cats with residents who observe them outdoors. The new approach incorporates an unusual element: rather than depending solely on human volunteers, the search network can now gather visual information directly from cats as they explore local neighbourhoods.

According to GdeKotBot, the project has facilitated the reunion of 407 pets with their owners. More than 28,000 users have joined the service. And the team states that this volunteer-cat initiative aims to extend search efforts into areas where frightened animals typically conceal themselves, such as enclosed or hidden spaces. Local media have reported these figures, though independent auditing has not verified them.

The system's operation commences when a pet owner reports a missing animal via the @GdeKotBot Telegram bot. This submission includes photographs of the pet and details concerning its disappearance location. Any individual encountering a cat outdoors can then upload a photograph and its recorded position. Artificial intelligence subsequently compares the submitted image with established missing-pet reports. It alerts the owner upon identifying a potential match.

Volunteer cats contribute to this established process. Owners of free-roaming cats in areas experiencing numerous missing-pet reports receive invitations to participate. Their pets wear tiny cameras and GPS trackers during their routine excursions, recording other cats encountered. Artificial intelligence then analyses the resultant footage, cross-referencing the observed animals against the missing-pet database.

If the system registers a potential match, the owner of the missing cat receives an alert. This communication includes specific location information, offering a lead for the owner to investigate further.

This method addresses a common difficulty for pet owners. A missing cat may remain in close proximity without being readily visible or approachable by humans. Frightened animals commonly seek refuge under parked vehicles, within dense bushes, beneath raised porches, or inside other similar sheltered locations.

These animals frequently avoid human contact, even when individuals are actively searching for them. A cat already habituated to roaming the local neighbourhood, however, may naturally traverse many of these same confined spaces during its regular daily itinerary. This offers a unique observational advantage.

That said, feline volunteers are not flawless search agents. Their cameras may fail to capture animals effectively. Captured footage can prove unclear or ambiguous. And artificial intelligence image matching processes sometimes generate false positives. So, these additional observations offer potentially useful clues, particularly when integrated with photographs and reports submitted by human participants.

The project also accommodates participation from residents who do not own a camera-equipped cat. Individuals can still contribute to the search effort. This involves simply photographing any animal they encounter and then sharing the image along with its location through the established chatbot.

GdeKotBot originated in Almaty, Kazakhstan, as a mechanism to coordinate reports of both missing and sighted cats. The service's broader methodology encompasses distributing information about missing pets through local communication channels. This helps to connect reported sightings with the geographical area where an animal initially disappeared.

The deployment of camera-equipped cats serves as an extension of this community-based model. It does not function as a replacement for human involvement. Their recorded footage offers an additional data source. People remain crucial for reporting missing animals, verifying potential matches, and ensuring the safe return of pets to their homes.

There are also inherent limitations to this system. Its effectiveness relies on the active participation of owners, the quality and usability of camera footage, and the precision of the image matching algorithms. But the organisers' reported reunion figures do not distinguish the specific contributions made by the camera-equipped cats from those of the original chatbot and its human users.

Still, the concept demonstrates a practical application of artificial intelligence extending beyond text or image generation. By integrating computer vision, location data, and a network of local participants, GdeKotBot aims to convert routine observations into actionable intelligence. And its newest volunteers possess an advantage no human search team can readily replicate, given their intimate familiarity with the neighbourhood.

  • The GdeKotBot project in Kazakhstan employs free-roaming cats fitted with cameras and GPS trackers.

  • Artificial intelligence analyses footage from these cats to identify missing pets.

  • The initiative expands an existing Telegram chatbot service for reporting and locating lost animals.

  • Feline volunteers can access areas humans cannot, potentially locating frightened hidden pets.

  • System efficacy depends on owner participation, clear footage, and accurate AI matching.
