Ma expressed his confidence in the future of Ant, foreseeing "more miracles" in the next two decades. This event marked Ma's first address to Ant Group since its halted mega initial public offering in 2020.
Despite distancing himself from Ant last year, Ma, a key figure in China's private sector, commended the company's accomplishments. He highlighted the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) in the upcoming years, stating that AI will usher in an era beyond imagination.
Ma emphasised that while AI will revolutionise everything, success hinges on creating genuinely valuable and unique innovations. He affirmed Ant's commitment to leveraging technology for societal progress in the years ahead. Ma's speech, though brief, resonated widely on Chinese social media platforms.
During the event, Ma was pictured alongside Eric Jing Xiandong, Ant's chairman, and Peng Lei, co-founder of Alibaba and Alipay, showcasing a leadership transition within the company. Shortly after Ma's speech, Ant announced that Jing would step down as CEO in 2025, with finance chief Cyril Han Xinyi taking over.
Ant Group, established in 2014, and its flagship mobile payments platform Alipay have been instrumental in transforming China into a cashless society. However, the rapid growth of fintech has prompted regulatory responses, leading to structural changes within Ant Group to comply with evolving regulations.
Ma's recent visit to an Alibaba campus did not touch upon Ant's IPO plans, but he expressed gratitude for the support and constructive criticism Ant has received. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained optimistic about shaping the future collaboratively.
