Intel has decided to keep its networking and communications unit within the company, following a review of strategic options. The chip maker previously explored selling various assets while weighing options to improve its financial standing.

The decision means Intel will retain its networking group, known as NEX. The company stated that "keeping NEX in-house enables tighter integration between silicon, software and systems, strengthening customer offerings across AI, data centre, and edge."

This move follows Intel considerably improving its cash position. The company secured an USD 8.9 billion investment from the U.S. government for a 10% stake.

Additional investments included USD 2 billion from SoftBank Group and USD 5 billion from Nvidia. Chief Financial Officer Dave Zinsner confirmed the improved cash position when Intel released its third-quarter results.

Earlier, Intel had explored plans to spin out NEX, considering it as part of CEO Lip-Bu Tan's plans to shave off non-core businesses, Reuters reported.

The company's stock advanced less than 1% to USD 43.76 during the regular session. It later ticked down 0.3% in extended trading.
