Haven-1 Private Space Station to Launch Next Year
World's first private space station, Haven-1, set to launch next year. Features luxurious amenities including queen-size beds and state-of-the-art gym. Designed to address challenges of zero gravity living with innovative solutions.
Unlike the cramped quarters of the International Space Station (ISS), Haven-1 promises a more modern and spacious experience for astronauts.
Designed by US-based space firm Vast in collaboration with renowned designer Peter Russell-Clarke, Haven-1 boasts luxurious features such as queen-size beds, a state-of-the-art gym, and warm maple wood interiors. Russell-Clarke highlighted the unique challenges of designing for zero gravity, aiming to create an efficient and comforting environment for space travellers.
The interior of Haven-1 is a stark departure from the utilitarian ISS, with soft, padded surfaces throughout to enhance safety for crew and visitors as they navigate the station. The station's four private crew quarters offer astronauts a space for rest, recharge, and personal activities, including online communication with loved ones back on Earth via SpaceX Starlink connectivity.
Sleeping in space has historically been a challenge due to the lack of gravity, but Vast aims to address this with a patent-pending signature sleep system. This system, roughly the size of a queen bed, provides equal pressure distribution and accommodates different sleeping positions, ensuring astronauts get a good night's rest.
The Common Area of Haven-1, measuring 24m³, will serve as a versatile hub for dining, exercise, laboratory experiments, and relaxation. Equipped with a deployable table and an expansive observation window offering stunning views of Earth, the area is designed to meet various crew needs.
A state-of-the-art gym within the station features a resistance band system tailored for bone, muscular, and cardiovascular fitness. This system, with body and station anchors, allows for customized exercise routines focusing on both upper and lower-body musculoskeletal health.
Drawing on the expertise of veteran NASA astronaut Andrew Feustel, who provided valuable insights based on his extensive space experience, Vast has prioritized astronaut well-being and functionality in Haven-1's design. Feustel emphasized the importance of intuitive design in ensuring astronauts can effectively live and work in space.
As Vast prepares for the launch of Haven-1 next year, the company has invested approximately US$1 billion in the project.
