Google Unveils Exciting AI Enhancements for Android Phones
Google and Samsung collaborate to bring AI features to millions of Android phones without major OS updates. Google Lens now supports video searches and voice input for questions. Enhanced shopping tool within Lens offers detailed information on products from various retailers.
The latest development allows Lens, Google's visual search engine, to conduct searches using videos. For instance, users can film objects they want to identify, such as fish in an aquarium, and ask questions out loud while recording. Google's blog explains, "Our systems will make sense of the video and your question together to produce an AI Overview, along with helpful resources from across the web."
Moreover, Lens now enables users to ask questions verbally during a photo search, a feature previously limited to text input. The shopping tool within Lens has also been enhanced to provide more detailed information on items for sale, including reviews and prices from various retailers.
These updates will be available to all devices running Google Lens on iOS and Android, reaching hundreds of millions of users. Google Lens currently handles 20 billion visual searches monthly, and these updates aim to make generative AI more accessible without the need for new hardware.
By integrating advanced AI capabilities into widely-used products, Google aims to familiarise users with its ecosystem gradually. This move could potentially lead to increased user engagement and conversion to paid services, such as purchasing Pixel phones or opting for Gemini Advanced in the future.
Earlier this year, the launch of the Galaxy S24 saw Samsung and Google heavily promoting the Circle to Circle feature. Despite this, Google has since expanded the capabilities of the feature by adding functionalities like full-page text translations, QR code scanning, and song identification, transforming it into a comprehensive AI-powered search app.
