Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold Review - Smartest Phone, Best with Updated Hardware

The Olive Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold is hands-down one of the most beautiful combinations of colour and materials I have seen on a phone. And underneath all of that beautiful hardware, this is still, in my opinion, the smartest phone out there.

What’s New

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold brings a collection of improvements rather than one dramatic reinvention. There is the new Tensor G6 processor, a stronger emphasis on running AI features locally, improvements to durability and the folding mechanism, some useful new creator tools, and incremental camera upgrades. Google has made the Pixel Fold better in many areas, but this generation feels much more like refinement than a major hardware leap.


Design

Google has blended premium textures with a striking but sophisticated contrast. The canvas of the device is a gorgeous matte, deep olive-green composite back cover that resists fingerprints while giving the phone an almost soft, velvety feel in the hand. It looks less like conventional glass and almost as though the phone has been wrapped in a premium material. That earthy green is complemented by a satin-finished, light greenish-gold aluminium frame, which adds just enough contrast without looking excessive. The polished gold-tone hinge cover adds another nice premium touch.

I particularly like that Google has found a good balance with the finish where it has enough shine to catch the light and give the phone a more luxurious feel, without becoming overly glossy or looking excessively reflective. At the same time, it avoids the flatter, more subdued look of fully matte finishes used on some other phones. Together with the olive back and satin frame, it gives the Pixel 11 Pro Fold a distinctive and very refined character.


A More Durable Fold, But the Crease Remains

Google has redesigned the folding mechanism with durability in mind, which is obviously important on a device that is going to be opened and closed thousands of times during its life. Unfortunately, there is still a visible crease running across the inner display. There are also some small gaps at the edge of the folding mechanism that can feel slightly sharp depending on how you hold the phone. Neither issue ruins the experience, but this feels like an opportunity missed.

Other foldable manufacturers have already demonstrated increasingly sophisticated approaches to reducing the visibility of the crease and improving the physical feel of the folding display. On a flagship device at this level, I would have liked to see Google push the mechanical engineering further. The new mechanism may be more durable, but aesthetically and physically, it does not feel like the next major evolution of foldable hardware.


The Multi Colour Notification Light

One of Google's more interesting additions is the new multi colour notification LED, which gives the phone another subtle way of communicating information without requiring you to open it. At the moment, its usefulness seems fairly limited.

Currently, it can only be used with Messages and Gemini. It feels like a feature with much more potential than what Google is currently allowing it to do. Hopefully a future software update opens it up to greater customisation, with different colours for different apps, contacts or types of notifications. For now, it is a nice idea that still feels slightly under-utilised.


Camera: Better, But Only Slightly

The camera system receives another round of improvements, including the familiar high resolution main camera and expanded computational zoom capabilities reaching up to 30x. As you would expect from a Pixel, Google's computational photography continues to do much of the heavy lifting.

Coming from the previous generation, though, I would describe the improvements as relatively minor. The camera is still very good. Images are still recognisably Pixel, with excellent processing and Google's characteristic approach to exposure, colour and HDR. But I just would not buy this generation specifically for the camera upgrade.


Magic Camera Is Fascinating, Even If It Is a Novelty

One of the more experimental additions is Magic Camera, where you can capture video and photos at the same time. It then automatically edits, crops, and un-blurs a curated collection of pictures that are ready to share. It is the sort of feature that is immediately interesting when you first try it, although I am less certain how frequently I will personally use it after the novelty wears off.

What I find more interesting than the feature itself is what is happening behind the scenes. The processing for still images can be handled locally by the Tensor G6. For years, many of the most impressive AI features on smartphones have depended heavily on sending information to cloud servers. Google increasingly appears to be moving parts of that intelligence directly onto the device. Magic Camera may be a novelty for me, but the technology enabling it is far more significant.


Creator Video Tools Are Surprisingly Useful

Google has also introduced new creator focused video features, and these are considerably more practical. There is a social media composition grid, which makes it easier to frame footage for formats commonly used across social platforms. The feature that impressed me most, though, is the built in teleprompter. Instead of simply displaying static text on the screen, the teleprompter can automatically scroll according to how quickly you are speaking. It sounds like a relatively small feature, but it could be genuinely useful for creators, presenters, educators or anyone recording themselves speaking directly to camera.

More interestingly, the speech processing required to make the teleprompter follow your pace is also handled locally using the Tensor G6. This is exactly the kind of AI implementation I like to see. It is not AI simply for the sake of putting an AI label on a specification sheet. It is AI quietly removing friction from something people genuinely want to do.


Voice Typing Is Becoming Much Smarter

Google's voice typing has always been one of the Pixel's strongest productivity features, and it continues to become more intelligent. Beyond simply converting your voice into text, it can now help summarise, restructure and polish what you have dictated. That can be incredibly useful when you know what you want to say but do not necessarily want to manually turn a stream of spoken thoughts into a properly structured message.

There is an important distinction when it comes to local processing, though. It can run directly on the phone, but the locally processed result can be slightly less polished than what Google's more capable cloud based AI can produce. For people who are uncomfortable sending personal messages or sensitive text to the cloud, that creates an interesting trade off. You can prioritise privacy and local processing today, but you may have to accept a slightly less capable result. The ideal future, of course, is having the quality of Google's AI models running entirely on your phone. We are not there yet.


Tensor G6 Reveals Google's Bigger Strategy

That is probably my biggest takeaway from using the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. The headline is not simply that it has another new Tensor processor. What matters is that you can see Google gradually moving more AI workloads from the cloud onto the phone itself. Magic Camera processing is happening locally. Parts of the creator experience are happening locally. Speech related features are increasingly being handled locally. Each individual feature might look relatively small, but together they point towards Google's longer term vision of a much more capable on-device AI platform.


At the same time, we should keep expectations realistic. Even running any of Google's least capable Gemini models completely locally on a smartphone is nearly impossible in current mobile phone technology… not even for laptops. There is still a long way to go before your phone can offer the full Gemini experience entirely offline, but Pixel is clearly moving in that direction.


Final Thoughts

The Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold remains, for me, the smartest phone available. Google continues to understand better than almost anyone how software, contextual intelligence and AI can remove friction from everyday smartphone use. The Pixel increasingly feels less like a collection of individual apps and more like an intelligent system working across the entire device. I also love seeing more of those AI experiences beginning to run locally.

But Google now has a different problem. Its software ambition is moving faster than its hardware. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is beautifully designed, its new materials are excellent, its hinge should be more durable, and its cameras remain very capable. But when you look at areas such as display creasing, folding technology and the pace of camera hardware improvements, Google could be competing much more aggressively. That is what I want from the next Pixel Fold. Google has already built one of the most intelligent smartphones you can buy. Now it needs to build foldable hardware that is just as ambitious.
