Despite falling behind competitors such as Microsoft-backed OpenAI in AI development, Google is working to close the gap by incorporating research breakthroughs into its widely used apps and devices.
Google Maps, one of Google's flagship products, has more than 2 billion monthly active users, according to CEO Sundar Pichai on a recent earnings call. The tech behemoth credits its success to significant investments in AI technology, which are now producing positive results.
The most recent announcement introduces a new search feature on Google Maps designed to improve the processing of open-ended queries. Users can now get more accurate and tailored results for searches such as "things to do with friends at night in Boston" or "fun autumn activities in Seattle."
Miriam Daniel, Google Maps' VP of Consumer Experiences, explained that Gemini, the AI chatbot, can understand contextual information such as time of day or season. This allows users to ask specific questions, such as "What can I do tonight?" rather than "What's near me?"
Similar to AI-generated summaries in Google's search tool, the new Maps search results will supplement existing location listings by providing users with more relevant information. Gemini uses real-world data gathered by Google to ensure accurate responses and prevent inaccuracies or biassed results.
In addition to Google Maps, the tech giant added new AI capabilities to Google Earth and the navigation app Waze. These enhancements include chatbots to help developers and urban planners analyse map data more efficiently, as well as a voice reporting feature on Waze for drivers to report road incidents.
