FoloToy: Revolutionising Smart Toys with AI Conversations

Shanghai-based start-up FoloToy is using generative AI to transform traditional companion toys into smart robots capable of natural conversations. FoloToy has partnered with toymakers to upgrade toy designs using large language models (LLMs) similar to ChatGPT. Their popular products include the Alilo Honey Bunny, which engages in interactive conversations, and the limited-edition "live" figure, Frank Murphy, designed to chat in multiple languages.

Shanghai-based start-up FoloToy is revolutionising the world of smart toys by incorporating generative artificial intelligence (AI) into traditional companion toys. Co-founded by Larry Wang and Guo Xinghua, FoloToy has partnered with over a dozen toymakers to upgrade toy designs using large language models (LLMs) similar to ChatGPT. This innovative approach allows the toys to engage in natural conversations with children, tapping into the growing trend of technology-infused toys.

The inspiration for FoloToy's venture came from the arrival of US start-up OpenAI's ChatGPT in late 2022, which sparked an AI rush in China. Wang explained in a recent interview with the South China Morning Post that the success of ChatGPT opened the world's eyes to the potential of generative AI. FoloToy aims to capitalise on this trend by leveraging LLMs to create new and improved toy products for both the Chinese and international markets.

One of FoloToy's most popular offerings is the Alilo Honey Bunny, a children's toy based on an older educational bunny toy. However, the Alilo version is equipped with an in-house-designed AI chipset, enabling it to engage in human-like, interactive conversations with users. This sets it apart from other conversational toys that can only respond to specific commands.

FoloToy is not limited to children's toys alone. The start-up has recently partnered with Yomiplanet, a Chinese art toy maker, to launch a limited-edition "live" figure named Frank Murphy. This AI-enabled companion toy is designed to chat in six languages, including English, Chinese, and Japanese. With its ability to hold conversations and provide witty responses, Frank Murphy has quickly gained attention in the market. Priced at 5,500 yuan (US$770), this unique toy offers a new level of interaction and entertainment.

FoloToy's success can be attributed, in part, to the availability of open-sourced LLMs from the US. These models, along with application programming interfaces provided by ChatGPT and similar services, have given smaller Chinese start-ups like FoloToy unprecedented opportunities to explore new applications for AI technology. Despite not having the same resources as big tech firms, FoloToy has managed to leverage these tools to create innovative products.

While the potential of AI in the toy industry is vast, monetising AI creations remains a challenge. Li Di, CEO of Microsoft AI chatbot spin-off Xiaoice, highlighted the difficulties of commercialising AI at a forum in December. However, FoloToy's focus on hardware, in addition to software, sets it apart from other start-ups. By combining AI technology with physical toys, FoloToy aims to differentiate itself and gain a competitive edge in the market.

FoloToy is just one example of the global race to develop consumer devices powered by the next generation of AI technology. Start-ups like Rabbit, founded by Chinese entrepreneur Jesse Lyu Cheng, have recently gained attention for their AI-powered voice devices. Established tech giants are also investing in AI-powered devices to revolutionise human-machine interactions beyond the app-focused experience offered by smartphones.

As FoloToy continues to innovate and explore the possibilities of AI in the toy industry, Wang emphasises that AI doesn't have to be serious; it can be fun too. With their AI-infused toys, FoloToy aims to bring joy and interactive experiences to children and adults alike.
