Five US States Urge Musk to Rectify AI Chatbot Spreading Election Misinformation

Secretaries of state from five US states have urged Elon Musk to remove disinformation generated by X's AI chatbot. Concerns have been made about how AI-generated content may contribute to voter disinformation. Musk's takeover of the platform is related to an increase in hate speech and misinformation.

They stated that the chatbot had been distributing misleading information about the November 5 election.

The significance of this request arises from the increased examination of social media sites, including X, for the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories. Concerns have been mounting in Washington about the potential for AI-generated content to mislead voters in the upcoming presidential and congressional elections.

Following Musk's acquisition of the platform previously known as Twitter in 2022, concerns have been raised by civil rights groups regarding an increase in hate speech and misinformation due to reduced content moderation. Musk himself, who recently endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has faced accusations of spreading misinformation, such as unsubstantiated claims about Democrats facilitating ineligible migrants to vote in federal elections.

Key Quotes:

The officials from Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Washington, Michigan, and New Mexico jointly stated in an open letter to Musk, "As Secretaries of State whose offices and 37 million constituents were recently impacted by false information provided by your platform, we are calling on you to immediately implement changes to X's AI search assistant, Grok, to ensure voters have accurate information in this critical election year."

Context:

Musk had announced in March that Grok, an AI chatbot developed by artificial intelligence startup xAI, would be accessible to all premium subscribers of X. Despite being a feature for premium users, the chatbot's dissemination of misinformation reached millions on social media, as highlighted by the state officials.

The secretaries of state emphasised the importance of directing Grok users to CanIVote.org, a nonpartisan website offering US voting information, whenever inquiries about US elections arise. However, X has not yet responded to the request for comment on the matter.
