According to Reuters, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, recorded its first ever cash burn, unsettling investors as other Big Tech firms prepare to release their results. This financial outflow stems from escalating artificial intelligence spending, now straining one of the world's most profitable organisations.

The Google parent company reported a cash burn of USD 5.9 billion in the second quarter. This occurred despite its cloud unit, which rents out AI computing power, achieving 82 percent growth. Alphabet anticipates an additional USD 15 billion in spending for 2026, with further increases projected.

This financial shift indicates artificial intelligence's reshaping effect on Big Tech, altering business models previously characterised by high margins and robust cash flows. Overall spending across Big Tech is forecast to exceed USD 700 billion this year, as internal cash flows prove insufficient. And the industry increasingly relies on debt and share sales to finance capital expenditure.

This financial strain will intensify scrutiny when Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and Amazon publish their results next week. Alphabet shares declined approximately 6 percent in early trading on a recent Thursday, while Meta and Amazon saw drops of around 3.5 percent. Microsoft's share price remained unchanged.

Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Markets, suggested the risk is skewed towards further spending increases. But analysts expect both Alphabet and Amazon to experience continued cash burn in 2026. Meta's cash flow is projected to shrink by 95.7 percent, reducing it to just USD 1.85 billion.

Microsoft, whose current fiscal year concludes in the next financial year end, is predicted to accumulate USD 25.39 billion in cash, less than half of the estimated USD 58.74 billion achieved previously. The capital expenditure to revenue ratio is set to nearly double this fiscal year for several major technology companies, with Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon all seeing increases. So, this financial commitment to infrastructure is visibly growing.

Google Cloud has demonstrated significantly faster growth compared to its larger competitors in recent quarters, suggesting a potential increase in market share. And this robust performance also exerts pressure on rivals Amazon and Microsoft.

Growth at Amazon Web Services, the largest cloud provider in the United States, is projected to reach 31.04 percent in the current quarter, an acceleration from 28.4 percent previously. Microsoft, conversely, is expected to report growth of 39.98 percent, consistent with the 40 percent increase recorded in the first quarter. But these growth rates might not fully satisfy investors seeking higher returns on increased capital expenditure.

Microsoft's shares have already fallen by nearly a fifth this year, marking them as the poorest performers among the Magnificent Seven group of stocks. Competition is also expected to intensify as Meta discusses renting computing power to Anthropic. This adds to an industry landscape that includes specialised artificial intelligence cloud firms such as CoreWeave.

  • Alphabet recorded its first cash burn, signalling increased artificial intelligence spending across Big Tech.

  • Other major technology firms, including Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon, face intensified scrutiny over their own artificial intelligence investments and cash flow.

  • Google Cloud's strong growth highlights intense competition in the cloud computing market, impacting rivals.

  • Capital expenditure to revenue ratios are set to nearly double, reflecting significant financial commitments to infrastructure.
