The billionaire tech mogul on Monday, 19 December posted a poll on his official Twitter page that lets the public vote on whether he should step down as the CEO of the social media giant. "Should I step down as head of Twitter?" he asks, noting that he'll "abide by the results of this poll".

As of writing, the "Yes" option is leading at more than 56%, with over ten million votes cast. That, of course, suggests the majority of those who voted want Musk out of Twitter. The results, however, aren't final yet as the poll would be open until around 6am Eastern Time.

Musk cemented his control of Twitter in early November after acquiring the company for US$44 billion, dissolving its board of directors and naming himself CEO.

The poll comes on the same day Twitter announced it would ban users from posting links to competing social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon and the Donald Trump-founded Truth Social. The new policy gives the microblogging site the power to delete any post that includes links to the aforementioned platforms. Any user who tries to bypass the ban, along with repeat offenders, would be subject to permanent suspensions.

"Twitter should be easy to use, but no more relentless free advertising of competitors," Musk explains. "No traditional publisher allows this and neither will Twitter."

Paul Graham, the founder of startup accelerator Y Combinator, was reportedly briefly suspended after publicly voicing his displeasure with the new policy. "This is the last straw. I give up. You can find a link to my new Mastodon profile on my site," he tweeted.

The Verge adds that platforms like Telegram, TikTok, YouTube, Weibo, and OnlyFan aren't covered by the ban – or at least not yet. It's also worth pointing out that, as of writing, the blog post outlining the "Promotion of alternative social platforms" policy leads to a 404 error page that says the page doesn't exist. As to what this means, it's not yet clear.
