Disney Plus Password Sharing Crackdown: CEO Bob Iger Sets June Deadline
Disney CEO Bob Iger announces password sharing crackdown starting in June. Clampdown will expand to all subscribers by September. Similar approach taken by Netflix resulted in increased income and higher subscriber numbers.
Disney Plus users who share their passwords with others will soon have to put an end to the practice. In an interview with CNBC, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the company will be cracking down on password sharing starting in June. The move is part of Disney's efforts to turn streaming into a growth business.
Disney Plus offers a wide range of exciting programs, including Disney movies and shows, Marvel Studios content, and Star Wars content. Additionally, the platform features exclusive programming like "Only Murders in the Building," which is available in the U.K. as part of the Star lineup on Disney Plus. With such compelling content, many subscribers find the service well worth the subscription price.
Iger revealed that password sharing restrictions will initially be implemented in a few countries and markets. However, the clampdown will eventually expand to all subscribers by September. This means that even if you haven't been affected yet, it's only a matter of time before the rules apply to you.
Netflix took a similar approach last year, charging subscribers an extra $7.99 per month if they allowed others to share their account. While some subscribers canceled their subscriptions in response, Netflix ultimately saw increased income and higher subscriber numbers. Disney will likely be hoping for a similar outcome.
Back in February, Disney's CFO, Hugh Johnston, warned that subscribers suspected of improper password sharing would receive a prompt to sign up for their own account. Additionally, subscribers would have the option to sign up others outside their household for an additional fee. However, further details about the implementation and potential fees have not been disclosed yet.
As the crackdown on password sharing approaches, Disney Plus users should be prepared to inform their shared account holders that they will need to stop accessing the service. The company's efforts to curb password sharing are aimed at ensuring fair usage and maximizing revenue from its streaming platform.
