A team of Chinese researchers has developed a new bioactive wound dressing that rapidly stops bleeding and promotes healing in severe burn treatments.

Scientists from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ruijin Hospital created the dressing using bacterial cellulose, a breathable and biocompatible material.
To enhance its effectiveness, the team anchored thrombin, the body’s natural blood-clotting enzyme, onto the cellulose. This was achieved by adding a cellulose-binding domain, a biological glue tag, to ensure the enzyme remains attached during use.

The resulting product, called Thrombin-Anchored Bacterial Cellulose (T-BC), is created by dipping the cellulose into the thrombin solution.
According to findings published in Advanced Materials on July 22, the T-BC dressing can stop bleeding in under 60 seconds.
The study also showed that the dressing is fully compatible with human skin and can trigger the body’s self-repair mechanisms.
Advanced Materials is a peer-reviewed journal known for publishing significant innovations in materials science, including breakthroughs in medicine, energy and electronics.
