China Regulator to Thoroughly Examine Public Concerns over Proposed Video Gaming Rules
In a bid to promote the healthy development of the online gaming industry, China's regulatory authorities have released draft rules aimed at curbing excessive spending and time spent on video games.
The proposed rules have sparked concerns among industry players and gamers alike.
However, the government has assured the public that it will earnestly study their concerns and make necessary improvements to the regulations.
The National Press and Publication Administration, the press and publications watchdog in China, stated that the draft rules were designed to safeguard and promote the healthy and prosperous development of the online gaming industry. The government has collected opinions widely during the drafting process and believes that soliciting public views is crucial for improving the provisions of the rules.
Under the proposed regulations, online games will be prohibited from offering rewards to players for daily logins, initial spending, or consecutive spending. These incentive mechanisms are commonly used in online games to encourage player engagement. Additionally, the draft rules require games to set limits on in-game spending and prohibit the speculation and auction of virtual gaming items.
The regulator has emphasised that the government is open to feedback from related government bodies, companies and users. They will thoroughly study the expressed concerns and views and make amendments to the rules accordingly. The administration has invited the public to provide their comments on the proposed regulations by January 22, 2024.
Industry experts believe that while the proposed rules aim to address concerns about excessive gaming, they may also impact the revenue streams of gaming companies. Striking a balance between promoting healthy gaming habits and allowing the industry to thrive will be crucial for the long-term success of the gaming sector in China.
