China Introduces New AI-Driven Professions in Response to Digital Boom

China adds 19 new AI-driven professions to its list of recognised professions. Young people are increasingly drawn to high-tech and emerging industries such as AI, big data, and smart manufacturing. Virtual architects, using AI algorithms, create immersive experiences in virtual worlds.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MHRSS) has recently introduced 19 new job titles to its list of recognised professions, reflecting the rapid advancement of AI and the changing workforce landscape.

Among the newly recognised professions are network anchors (also known as online news anchors), generative AI system application specialists, cultural and creative product planning and operations engineers, intelligent manufacturing system operations and maintenance administrators, and bioengineering technicians. The ministry also recognised 29 existing job classifications, including mobile operating system application designers, and granted specialists in these disciplines access to appropriate national policy advantages.

The boom in new professions occurs as China attempts to capitalise on technology innovation and industrial upgrading, resulting in a plethora of work prospects. Young people, in particular, are drawn to high-tech and emerging industries such as AI, big data, and smart manufacturing. The field of emerging high-tech has seen a significant increase in graduates, with intelligent manufacturing, AI-generated content, and AI large model options being particularly popular.

Chen Yun, director of the Chinese Academy of Labour and Social Security's employment and entrepreneurship research branch, explains that the digital industry is well-suited to young people's interests and goals, with more job openings that meet their expectations.

A virtual architect is one of the most intriguing new occupations, as they use AI algorithms to create virtual worlds. This career is directly related to the gaming business and attempts to deliver immersive experiences for gamers, moviegoers, and virtual reality enthusiasts. Wang, a rookie to the area, expressed confidence in his job's potential, claiming, "This technology has vast potential, and I can use it to represent the whole world." Virtual architects can design a variety of online environments, including 3D meeting rooms, online press conferences, exhibitions, and virtual museums, to satisfy consumer needs.

Other digital technology-related vocations are gaining popularity in China, particularly among youthful job searchers. As the country focuses on building new high-quality productive forces, it is also working to make established industries more sophisticated, intelligent, and environmentally friendly. This involves supporting developing and forward-thinking businesses such as quantum technology and life sciences.

To support these trends, China is stepping up efforts to alter the talent structure of businesses and create possibilities for college graduates who are familiar with the internet and varied in their talents. The country is forecast to have over 11.7 million college graduates by 2024, and the number of young job seekers continues to rise.

In response to the growing demand for trained professionals, China has allocated government-subsidized vocational training to 18 million individuals by 2023, with a concentration on critical industries such as advanced manufacturing and modern services. This year, the government has allotted 66.7 billion yuan (about $9.39 billion) in employment subsidies, with a focus on helping college graduates, rural migrant workers, and other vital populations. China is dedicated to increasing young employment, establishing market-oriented channels, and providing better job and entrepreneurial assistance.
