China's Didi, GAC Aion to Mass Produce Robotaxis Next Year

Didi Global's self-driving unit's joint venture with GAC Aion has received a business license for mass production of fully self-driving electric robotaxis in China. The joint venture, named Andi, plans to roll out a crossover electric SUV as its inaugural model in 2025. Andi aims to lead the autonomous driving industry by creating an early L4 commercial route and implementing a closed-loop business model for L4 development.

Chinese ride-hailing giant Didi Global has announced that its self-driving unit's joint venture with EV maker GAC Aion has received a business license, making it the first joint venture in China to mass produce fully self-driving electric robotaxis. The joint venture, named Andi, plans to roll out its inaugural model, a crossover electric sports utility vehicle (SUV), in 2025.

According to a statement released by the company on Sunday, Andi aims to lead the autonomous driving industry by creating an early L4 commercial route and implementing the world's first closed-loop business model for L4 development. Zhang Xiong, the deputy general manager of GAC Aion, expressed excitement about the joint venture's position as a pioneer in the autonomous driving industry, combining technology, smart manufacturing, and operations.

While the company did not disclose the authority that issued the license, it is clear that Didi and GAC Aion are making significant strides in the development of self-driving technology. Last year, Didi's self-driving technology arm, Didi Autonomous Driving, secured funding of approximately $149 million from two investors, including GAC Group's subsidiary, GAC Capital Co.

The news comes shortly after Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, announced that the company would be unveiling its own robotaxi in August. Tesla had previously abandoned plans to produce an inexpensive car and shifted its focus to developing self-driving robotaxis on a small-vehicle platform.

With Didi and GAC Aion's joint venture, China is positioning itself as a key player in the autonomous driving industry. The mass production of fully self-driving electric robotaxis marks a significant milestone in the country's efforts to lead the way in innovative transportation solutions.
