China and Brazil Sign Deal for Landmark Clean Energy Transmission Project
China and Brazil have signed a 30-year franchise agreement for the Brazil northeast UHVDC power transmission line project. China and Brazil have officially signed a 30-year franchise agreement for the Brazil northeast ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) power transmission line project. The signing took place in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, and the project is expected to be operational by 2029.
This landmark project aims to deliver clean energy from wind, solar, and hydropower sources in northeastern and northern Brazil to the central part of the country. The goal is to promote national clean and low-carbon energy transformation.
The project, which was won by China's State Grid in December, is the largest auction of infrastructure power transmission projects ever held in Brazil. This is the third successful bid by the Chinese company, following their involvement in the Belo Monte UHVDC transmission project.
Spanning over 1,468 kilometers, the new engineering project involves the construction of an 800kV DC transmission line. This line will deliver 5 million kilowatts of clean power from wind and solar farms in northeastern Brazil to key regions in the southeast, including metropolitan areas in Brasilia.
The project is expected to meet the electricity needs of over 12 million people while supporting Brazil's green development goals. It will ensure the flow of renewable energy generation from the booming wind and solar power plants in the northeast region.
The signing ceremony of the concession agreement took place at the Brazilian Presidential Palace in Brasilia. The event was witnessed by Chinese Ambassador to Brazil Zhu Qingqiao, Brazil's Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira, and Sandoval Feitosa, the head of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL).
Minister Alexandre Silveira expressed his belief that this mega project will play a crucial role in improving the safe and stable operation of Brazil's power grid. It will also promote wind and solar energy in northeastern Brazil, supporting the country's green and low-carbon development goals for its economy and society.
