Batteries Warning Issued Following Second Fire at Waste Plant
Residents urged to dispose of batteries carefully. Second fire at recycling site linked to discarded batteries. Council emphasises the importance of responsible battery disposal.
The incident occurred at the Carnaby Household Waste Recycling Site in Bridlington, as reported by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council on 30 August. The fire is thought to have been started by discarded batteries, emphasising the importance of proper disposal techniques.
According to a council spokesperson, the increase in such incidents is due to the disposal of batteries and disposable e-cigarettes in regular bins. The recent fire caused minor damage to the waste transfer station, but quick action by firefighters prevented any injuries. Last year, a fire at the same location forced a two-day public closure.
To reduce the risk of future fires, the council is urging residents to dispose of batteries responsibly. This can be accomplished using designated containers at household waste recycling facilities or drop-off points in supermarkets and stores. Councillor Paul West, in charge of the environment and transport, praised the firefighters for their quick response and emphasised the importance of community involvement in fire prevention efforts.
