Notably, major players like Bumble, Grindr, and Match Group Inc., which owns Tinder, Hinge, OKCupid, and Plenty of Fish, have committed to this new code.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland announced that these platforms, representing 75% of the industry in Australia, must implement the code by April 1. The code mandates the implementation of systems to detect potential online harm incidents and the termination of accounts of offenders. Additionally, it requires clear complaint and reporting mechanisms, along with a new rating system to assess platform compliance.

The call for a code of conduct arose after research by the Australian Institute of Criminology highlighted the prevalence of sexual violence on dating apps and websites. Minister Rowland stressed the importance of a robust complaint-handling process and the need for consistent banning of individuals across all platforms if necessary.

Match Group has already taken steps to enhance safety on Tinder by introducing features like photo and identification verification to deter malicious users. The platform also utilises artificial intelligence to provide real-time warnings about potentially offensive language. Match Group expressed its commitment to collaborating with the government and industry to ensure a safer dating environment for Australians.

Bumble echoed the government's goal of eradicating gender-based violence and emphasised its dedication to prioritising safety. Grindr, on the other hand, expressed its honour in contributing to the code's development and shared the government's dedication to online safety. Notably, platforms like Happn, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Feeld have not yet signed up to the code.

The Australian government anticipates that the code will empower users to make informed decisions about choosing dating apps that prioritise safety. Furthermore, authorities have warned that if online dating operators fail to uphold safety standards, legislation may be enforced to protect Australians on these platforms.
