Australia Bans DeepSeek on Government Devices Citing Security Concerns

Australia has taken a significant step by banning DeepSeek from all government devices due to security concerns related to the Chinese artificial intelligence startup. The Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs issued a mandatory directive for all government entities to cease the use or installation of DeepSeek products, applications, and web services. Additionally, they are required to remove all existing instances of DeepSeek from Australian Government systems and devices.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke highlighted that DeepSeek presents an "unacceptable risk" to government technology. The immediate ban aims to safeguard Australia's national security and interests. This decision comes in the wake of concerns raised by several Australian media outlets regarding the potential threats posed by DeepSeek.

The ban on DeepSeek does not extend to devices used by private citizens, focusing solely on government systems and devices. The global tech market experienced a downturn following the recent launch of DeepSeek. The startup's cost-effective nature and reduced chip requirements have sparked discussions about the significant investments made by the West in chipmakers and data centres.

Australia's move to prohibit DeepSeek follows a similar action taken by Italy, with other European countries and regions also scrutinising the activities of the AI firm. Taiwan recently implemented a ban on government departments from utilising DeepSeek, aligning with the growing international concerns surrounding the company's operations.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's government had previously imposed a comprehensive ban on the Chinese social media app TikTok two years ago due to security apprehensions. The decision to ban DeepSeek on government devices underscores Australia's commitment to prioritising national security and protecting sensitive government information from potential threats.
