Apple’s 15-Inch MacBook Air Could Be Releasing Soon
Updated: Dec 19, 2023
Apple could be coming out with a new, larger MacBook Air soon.
Bloomberg reports the Cupertino tech giant is already in the process of testing a new laptop to check if it's compatible with third-party apps on the App Store, according to developer logs shared with the news outlet. Such tests are reportedly necessary in the run-up to launch.
The test logs suggest the laptop in question features a processor with specs that rival current models but has a larger, higher-resolution display. The processor is said to be "on par" with the current M2 chip, housing eight CPU cores and 10 GPU cores, along with 8GB of RAM.
The laptop was only referred to as "Mac 15,3" in the logs, but the specs do seem to back up previous rumours of Apple working on a 15-inch MacBook Air model. It was also spotted to be running on macOS 14, the latest version of the Mac software, which is expected to debut at WWDC 2023 in June.
Perhaps the only caveat is that it's shipping with an M2-equivalent chip, instead of a more advanced M3 chip that's coming later in the year. Bloomberg does note that "bigger changes" are coming to the Mac once the M3 chip releases, underscoring the shift from the 5nm process to the 3nm. The new chips would allow for improved performance and boosted efficiency on Macs.
There's no exact release date yet for the new Mac, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported that it could come out between late spring and summer 2023.
Apart from it, Apple also plans to refresh the 13-inch Air model, the 24-inch iMac and the 13-inch MacBook Pro. The tech giant also plans to put out M3-equipped 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros within the first half of 2024.
The rumours come amid Apple's Mac shipments suffering major downturns in the first quarter of 2023. Market research group IDC estimates that global Mac shipments dropped by more than 40% year-over-year during the period.
