Acer Predator Helios 18 Review: A Weighty Powerhouse That Delivers Desktop-Like Gaming Experiences
The Acer Predator Helios 18 is a gaming powerhouse that impresses with its exceptional performance and stunning graphics capabilities. Equipped with top-of-the-line hardware, this laptop is crafted to deliver an immersive gaming experience. Let’s explore the features that make the Predator Helios 18 a standout choice for gamers.
Powered by the Intel Core i9-14900HX processor, and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU with 12 GB GDDR6 VRAM, this laptop delivers exceptional processing power and enables smooth and realistic gaming experiences. With a maximum graphics power of up to 175W, the Predator Helios 18 handles even the most demanding games and graphics-intensive tasks. This high power output ensures that the GPU operates at its full potential, delivering exceptional performance and visuals.
In terms of design, the Acer Predator Helios 18 sports a bold and aggressive look. The chassis, made of aluminium, gives it a sturdy and premium feel. Measuring 28.9mm in thickness, 404mm in width, and 311.6mm in depth, it is somewhat chunky and bulky. However, this is justified by its large 18-inch screen and full keyboard layout. The LED logo on the lid and along the rear adds a stylish touch to the overall aesthetics, which you can customise in colour and effect through the built-in PredatorSense software. Although the screen is not as thin as other models on the market, it feels sturdy, though a bit wobbly when typing hard.
Weighing 3.25kg, the laptop is relatively heavy. For someone who needs to travel, the Helios 18 is definitely not suitable. However, for those who plan to use the laptop as a pseudo-desktop, keeping it at a fixed location most of the time, it is an absolute beast.
The Predator Helios 18 features an 18" LCD display with WQXGA resolution (2560 x 1600). It has a 16:10 aspect ratio and utilizes ComfyView (Matte) IPS technology. The display boasts a 240Hz refresh rate and supports Nvidia G-Sync tearing prevention technology. While the LCD panel might not be as stunning as OLED or mini-LED panels, it’s still excellent for gaming.
The laptop also lacks a fingerprint reader, which may be a downside if you want biometric authentication for your security. However, it does include a Full HD webcam that offers decent image quality, with features like auto framing, eye contact, and background blur, and shutter speed adjustment, though, unfortunately, there’s no privacy shutter. The camera quality is good for a gaming laptop, appearing more natural without excessive sharpening.
The keyboard on the Predator Helios 18 is comfortable to type on, with per-key RGB backlighting and MAGKEY 3.0 swappable keycaps. The keys are fast and responsive, making typing comfortable without any mushiness. The MAGCLICK mechanical switch provides tactile feedback, ideal for gaming, though it may be too sensitive for typing, potentially leading to accidental key presses. For a better typing experience, you should try using the MAGSPEED keycaps, which utilise a rubber dome similar to other keys on the keyboard with an exclusive look.
Connectivity-wise, the Predator Helios 18 is well-equipped, supporting Wi-Fi 6 (802.11be) and Bluetooth. On the sides of the laptop, you'll find an ethernet port, a micro SD card reader, 3 USB-A ports and a 3.5mm audio jack. At the rear, there are two Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports, an HDMI port, and a power port. The laptop also includes a Kensington lock for added security.
In terms of audio, the Predator Helios 18 features dual speakers with DTS X: Ultra Audio. While the sound quality is decent, it may not meet the expectations of audiophiles. Despite the inclusion of a top-facing sound bar, the overall performance of the speakers falls short of expectations.
The sound profile is flat, and when adjusting the volume to around 50%, the body starts to vibrate. In that volume setting, the sound also becomes slightly distorted and too sharp, which is not pleasant to the ears. The microphones perform slightly better than average, but can still sound a bit muffled.
The battery life of the Predator Helios 18 is acceptable, offering a maximum runtime of five hours with a 90Wh battery capacity and a 330W power supply. Given the laptop's size and power, this battery life is expected.
The Acer Predator Helios 18 is available in a single configuration with 16GB of DDR5 SDRAM and a 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. The laptop offers flexibility for future upgrades, with two upgradeable RAM slots supporting up to 64GB of DDR5 SODIMM RAM and two M.2 storage slots.
In terms of performance, the Predator Helios 18 is nothing short of impressive. In Geekbench 6, the laptop achieves an outstanding single-core score of 2816 and a multi-core score of 13766. These scores demonstrate the raw power of the Intel Core i9-14900HX processor, showcasing its ability to handle demanding tasks with ease.
Gaming is where Predator Helios 18 truly shines, as it should, being a gaming laptop. We first tested AAA titles on it. Chief of which was Cyberpunk 2077, a graphically intensive game, and the laptop managed to deliver an average FPS of 70 with ray tracing enabled, DLSS super resolution, and DLSS frame generation all turned on. Even running Hogwarts Legacy, the laptop maintained a solid performance with an average FPS of 150. This level of performance surpasses even some premium desktop-grade systems, which is truly remarkable for a laptop. Throughout these sessions, both the GPU and CPU maintained temperatures around 85 degrees Celsius, which is also pretty decent for a laptop.
In CS2, the Predator Helios 18 achieves an impressive 200 FPS, while in Valorant, it goes even further at 300 FPS, ensuring you enjoy smooth and fluid gameplay. The laptop's high refresh rate display enhances the gaming experience, allowing your gameplay experience to feel more responsive.
The Acer Predator Helios 18 features the Acer PredatorSense software, which can be easily accessed by tapping the hotkey on the numpad. This software allows users to monitor and customise various aspects of the laptop. With PredatorSense, you can adjust settings and personalise your gaming experience. It offers different scenario modes, including Quiet, Balanced, Performance, and Turbo, which can also be adjusted through the button above the keyboard.
If you're using the laptop in a shared space or with someone else, switching to Quiet or Balanced mode can help minimise fan noise and create a more comfortable environment. Surprisingly, even in Quiet mode, it still manages to run Hogwarts at around 80+ FPS, compared to 150 FPS with loud fan noise at Turbo mode. So, if you prioritise performance over noise, Turbo mode would be ideal. Just be prepared for the increase in fan noise.
Priced at S$3,999, the Acer Predator Helios 18 comes with impressive specifications, including an i9-14900HX processor and an RTX 4080 GPU. The Predator series from Acer has traditionally fallen within this price range, defining itself as high-performance gaming laptops. However, when compared to similar models from other brands like the Razer Blade 18 and Alienware M18, the Acer Predator Helios 18 stands out as a more affordable option, typically priced at least S$500 cheaper.
Overall, the Acer Predator Helios 18 is targeted at serious gamers and enthusiasts. It’s designed for those who demand high-performance and visually stunning gaming experiences. However, potential buyers should note a few downsides: its weight makes it less suitable for frequent travel, and the audio system, despite decent specs, underperforms, which might disappoint audiophiles. If you prioritise power over portability and can overlook the lacklustre sound quality for a desktop-like gaming experience, the Acer Predator Helios 18 is an excellent choice.
