Hyperloop, a cutting-edge mode of mass transit that involves capsules moving on magnetic fields through depressurised tubes, reached a major milestone at a testing facility.

The test vehicle was successfully levitated and moved quickly through the tube, representing a significant step forward for Elon Musk's high-speed transit system. Marinus van der Meijs, Hardt's technology and engineering director, expressed his excitement about the successful test, highlighting the activation of the guidance and propulsion systems.

The European Hyperloop Centre features a 420-meter tube made up of 34 separate sections, the majority of which are larger than eight feet in diameter. Drag is reduced by creating a vacuum within the tube to lower the internal pressure, allowing capsules to travel quickly. Developers intend for capsules to reach speeds of up to 700 kph (435 mph), outperforming short-haul flights, high-speed rail, and goods trucks.

Despite the confined space of the test centre, the capsule maintained a moderate speed during testing. Van der Meijs explained that the capsule was accelerated to around 30 kph (18 mph) within the tube, covering a distance of more than 300 feet. This achievement necessitated meticulous coordination of multiple functions such as levitation, propulsion, and guidance.

Roel van de Pas, Hardt Hyperloop's commercial director, emphasised the complexity of seamlessly integrating these functions, comparing it to an orchestra playing in unison. The ultimate goal is to start passenger operations by 2030, which will necessitate a combination of technology, policy, and public-private partnerships.

While some analysts question the feasibility of hyperloop technology due to the significant infrastructure investment required, advocates remain optimistic about its potential. Various global teams are working to realise Musk's vision of ultra-fast transport, with ongoing efforts to solve the complex puzzle of making Hyperloop a viable mobility solution.

Dubai had previously investigated the possibility of a hyperloop line connecting the city-state to Abu Dhabi. Despite initial enthusiasm and grand announcements, the project encountered difficulties, resulting in the closure of Hyperloop One in December.
