Shanghai has launched the world’s first gold recycling ATM, allowing users to sell their gold jewellery in just 30 minutes.

Developed by Shenzhen-based Kinghood Group, the machine is located at the Global Harbor mall in the city’s Putuo District. It is part of the company’s Smart Gold Store concept and has drawn large crowds since its debut on April 16, 2025.
The ATM accepts gold items weighing over 3 grams with a minimum purity of 50%. The process includes identity verification, melting the gold at temperatures exceeding 1,000°C, and a second assay to confirm purity.

A service fee of 18 yuan (USD 2.50) per gram is deducted before the final amount is transferred directly to the user’s bank account.

The machine also allows instant purchases of gold jewellery, offering a one-stop self-service experience.
Footage from the mall shows curious onlookers watching as jewellery melts at 1,200°C. The machine has already been launched in about 100 cities across China, with a second unit planned for Shanghai.

The Smart Gold Store system supports mobile registration in over 200 countries, multi-currency payments in more than 100 countries, and real-time pricing linked to international gold markets.
Kinghood Group first introduced the Smart Gold Store in 2019, integrating gold purchase, customisation, and recycling into a single platform. The latest version features high-precision technology with 0.01% accuracy in weight and purity detection.
The innovation offers a fast alternative to traditional jewellery stores, appealing to customers eager to capitalise on rising gold prices.
