Wikipedia has marked its 25th anniversary by announcing partnerships with several major artificial intelligence companies. This initiative aims to integrate the platform's extensive human-governed knowledge into AI systems at scale.

These new collaborations include Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity. They join existing partners such as Google, Ecosia, Nomic, Pleias, ProRata, and Reef Media.
The partnerships are designed to provide structured, regularly updated access to Wikipedia's content. This strategy also generates revenue for the organisation and helps reduce the site's burden, ensuring continued accessibility for human users.
Over its 25-year history, Wikipedia has compiled 65 million articles across 300 languages. This vast encyclopaedia has been built by the contributions of almost 250,000 volunteers globally.
Founder Jimmy Wales initiated the platform by writing the common phrase Hello World. One of Wikipedia’s earliest pages provided an explanation of the platform, with its edit history traceable back to November 2001.
The oldest surviving edit dates from January 15, 2001, and was for a page titled UuU. This page was originally intended to be a list of countries whose names begin with the letter U.
Initially, educators often viewed citations of Wikipedia with profound suspicion because it was online, free, and created by volunteers. Today, however, the platform is widely respected and generally accepted as a reliable source of information.

The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence models, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, for finding information has influenced Wikipedia’s decision to pursue these enterprise access deals. These agreements align with Wikipedia's founding principles.
Wikipedia's third founding pillar states that it is free content that anyone can use, edit, and distribute. This principle allows AI companies to scrape or download its content to train their AI models, regardless of formal consent.
The newly formed partnerships offer a structured way for AI companies to access the knowledge base. While revenue details are not released, these deals are expected to provide Wikipedia with likely hundreds of thousands of US dollars.
The 25th-anniversary celebration also highlighted the nearly 250,000 individuals who have built and continue to expand Wikipedia. Stories included volunteer editors, such as one known as Hurricane Hank, and medical professionals contributing accurate health information.
Founder Jimmy Wales described Wikipedia as 25 years of humanity at its best. He expressed hope that this foundation will also help create AI at its best.
