Walmart has announced the rollout of AI-powered "super agents" aimed at transforming customer experience and boosting operational efficiency across its global retail network.

The company unveiled four agentic AI tools on Thursday, designed for shoppers, store employees, suppliers and sellers, and software developers. These super agents will become the primary interface for AI interactions with Walmart, replacing existing tools and introducing new capabilities.

Walmart is targeting a major shift in its business model, aiming for online sales to make up 50% of total revenue within five years. The retailer reported USD 648 billion in annual sales last year.

The AI initiative is part of Walmart’s strategy to compete with Amazon, which has also introduced AI tools for its platform. Walmart hopes to attract more customers by using AI to simplify product discovery, returns, and delivery.

One of the new tools, Sparky, is already live on Walmart’s app. It helps customers with product suggestions, summarises reviews, and finds compatible items like printer ink.

In its enhanced form, Sparky will be able to reorder items, plan themed events, and use computer vision to suggest recipes based on fridge contents, according to Hari Vasudev, Walmart’s U.S. chief technology officer.

Agentic AI, the technology behind these tools, is an advanced form of generative AI that requires minimal human input to complete tasks.

A second super agent, called "Associate," will launch in the coming months. It will allow employees to perform tasks such as applying for parental leave or accessing sales data with minimal effort.

For sellers and advertisers, Walmart is developing "Marty," a super agent that will assist with onboarding, order management, and ad campaign creation.

A fourth tool, the "Developer" super agent, will serve as the foundation for testing and launching all future AI tools.

Suresh Kumar, Walmart’s chief technology officer, said the timing of the launch reflects growing customer readiness to use AI in daily life.

The company did not confirm whether the new tools would lead to job reductions. However, Dave Glick, senior vice president of enterprise business systems, said the initiative would create new roles.

On Wednesday, Walmart announced the hiring of former Instacart executive Daniel Danker as executive vice president for AI acceleration, product and design. It also created a new executive vice president role focused on AI, which remains unfilled.

While Walmart has not directly linked job cuts to AI, it has been reducing corporate staff and automating e-commerce fulfilment centres, resulting in some workforce reductions.

Other tech giants, including Amazon, Microsoft and Google, have cited AI as a reason for recent layoffs, despite strong market conditions.
