A recent study by workplace communications platform Slack delved into the perceptions and attitudes towards AI among 5,000 desktop workers. The study identified five distinct AI personalities in the workplace: The Maximalist, The Underground, The Rebel, The Superfan, and The Observer.
Interestingly, only half of the respondents fell into the Maximalist or Underground categories, presenting a challenge for businesses aiming to promote AI adoption among their workforce. Christina Janzer, Slack’s senior vice president of research and analytics, recently discussed the varied perceptions of AI in the workplace with the Associated Press.
Janzer highlighted the importance of understanding the diverse emotions people associate with AI, as these emotions play a crucial role in driving AI adoption. Individuals who feel guilty or nervous about AI are less likely to embrace it, underscoring the need to guide them towards appreciating the benefits of this technology.
The Maximalists are enthusiastic early adopters of AI, deriving value from its use and actively promoting it to others. On the other hand, The Underground users, although utilising AI, tend to conceal their usage due to concerns about perception and lack of clear guidelines from their companies. Janzer emphasised the need to provide support and encouragement to such users to foster a culture where AI usage is celebrated.
In Slack's study, 19% of workers were classified as Rebels, with a notable majority being women. Janzer expressed concern over this trend, attributing it to women perceiving AI as a threat to job security. She suggested that building trust in the workplace could encourage more women to experiment with AI, as trust plays a pivotal role in technology adoption.
Employers looking to promote AI adoption among their workforce should focus on providing clear guidelines on AI usage, fostering a culture that celebrates AI, and encouraging a spirit of experimentation. Creating an environment where employees feel comfortable trying out AI in small ways, such as automating tasks like email writing or content summarisation, can help demystify the technology and showcase its benefits.
When asked about concerns regarding AI replacing human jobs, Janzer succinctly stated, "People with AI are going to replace people without AI." This statement underscores the importance of upskilling and embracing AI as a tool to enhance productivity and efficiency in the workplace.
