The British government announced plans for a default overnight curfew on social media applications for individuals aged 16 and 17, according to Reuters. This measure adds to existing proposals for a comprehensive ban on social media use for all children under the age of 16. The new regulations seek to manage older teenagers' access to online platforms.

Users subject to the new curfew will find their access to social media applications blocked between midnight and 6 a.m. This restriction will apply by default unless individuals actively adjust their settings. Furthermore, features specifically designed to encourage extended scrolling, such as videos that play automatically in sequence, will also be disabled by default. These adjustments aim to modify consumption habits for young people.

The stated objective behind these new measures is to prevent an abrupt transition for those turning 16, who would otherwise gain unrestricted access to social media. They also offer some protection from potential negative effects associated with scrolling late at night. And technology minister Liz Kendall commented, stating these measures will prove crucial for helping young people achieve necessary sleep, concentrate on their education, and spend more quality time with family and friends.

This move reflects widespread international concerns among parents and policymakers. Such worries centre on protecting young children from the adverse effects social media can have on their mental and physical health. Recent research indicated that restrictions on social media led to improvements in sleep patterns, concentration levels, and general wellbeing among teenagers. The study highlighted that an overnight curfew was the simplest measure for families to maintain and yielded the most consistent benefits for sleep.

The initial set of regulations concerning social media restrictions is scheduled to be presented to parliament before the end of the current year. The government anticipates these measures will enter into force during spring 2027. Officials have pledged robust implementation and diligent enforcement of the new rules across digital platforms.

But challenges regarding the effectiveness of such bans have emerged internationally. A team that provided advice to Australia, which was the first nation to prohibit social media for children, discovered issues. The team reported that online platforms faced significant difficulties at the initial stage of putting checks for age verification into practice. This rendered the intended ban largely ineffective in its application.

Google and TikTok have each, within the last month, independently resolved a US lawsuit. The legal action was initiated by a minor who contended that social media platforms caused harm to his mental health. These settlements highlight ongoing legal scrutiny facing Big Tech organisations regarding youth engagement on their platforms.

  • The UK government plans a default midnight to 6 a.m. social media curfew for 16- and 17-year-olds.

  • This adds to an existing plan for a total social media ban for those under 16.

  • Default settings will block app access during curfew hours and disable continuous scrolling features.

  • Studies indicate social media restrictions can improve young people's sleep, concentration, and wellbeing.

  • Previous efforts in Australia faced difficulties with age verification enforcement on online platforms.
