UBTech Robotics Set to Ramp Up Production of Industrial Humanoids by Year End
Shenzhen-based UBTech Robotics is gearing up to commence mass production of its humanoid robots by the end of this year, as the company intensifies its output amidst stiff competition in China's robotics sector. Chief Brand Officer Michael Tam revealed that UBTech plans to deliver between 500 to 1,000 units of its Walker S Series industrial humanoid robots in 2024 to various clients, including car manufacturers, Apple supplier Foxconn, and logistics firm SF Express.

While UBTech envisions a future where humanoid robots are commonplace in households, the current focus remains on industrial applications. Tam highlighted the necessity for humanoid robots in factories to address the challenge of labour shortages. He explained that factories provide a more controlled environment for robots to operate effectively, as they are not yet advanced enough to serve in domestic settings.
Established in 2012 and listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2023, UBTech is a key player in China's robotics industry, offering a diverse range of robotic products for tasks such as cleaning, delivery, and service. The company introduced its advanced industrial humanoid Walker S1 in October last year, which has already been deployed in the factories of major car manufacturers.
UBTech's upcoming deliveries will predominantly feature the Walker S2 model, set to launch in the second quarter of this year with enhanced durability and a lighter build compared to its predecessor. Additionally, a newer version, the Walker S3, is slated for release later in 2024. Despite facing heightened competition in China's robotics sector, UBTech believes its decade-long experience provides a competitive edge over newer entrants.
While UBTech reported a net loss of 516.4 million yuan (US$70.5 million) in the first half of 2024, the company remains committed to investing in artificial intelligence (AI) rather than prioritising immediate profitability. Tam emphasised the importance of patience and continued investment in AI capabilities to enhance the functionality of humanoid robots.
