When it comes to numbers, Facebook outperforms TikTok as it hit 2.9 billion monthly active users (MAUs) globally as of 30 June 2021 — a 7% year-over-year increase. According to Statista, Instagram amasses approximately one billion global users a month as of July 2021. Meanwhile, YouTube has roughly 792.2 million MAUs around the world as of the second quarter of 2021.

Even though it has fewer MAUs than Facebook, TikTok is rapidly growing as it recorded a 45% increase in MAUs since July 2020, when the app had 689 million users flocking to the app monthly. By January 2018, the company reached approximately 55 million global users while that figure increased to over 271 million by December 2018 and 508 million by December 2019.

Aside from that, TikTok beat Facebook as the world's most downloaded app in 2020. As a result, the platform became the only app that was not owned by Facebook to make the global top five of the most downloaded apps list. Behind Facebook were Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. That's not all as TikTok became the first non-Facebook mobile app to achieve three billion downloads around the world, as reported by app analytics firm SensorTower.

In terms of average watch time in the United States and the United Kingdom, TikTok outpaces YouTube in that regard. As of June 2021, U.S. users watched over 24 hours of video monthly on TikTok versus 22 hours and 40 minutes on YouTube. Meanwhile, U.K. statistics show a bigger gap, with U.K. users consuming nearly 26 hours of content on TikTok monthly, compared to less than 16 hours on Google's video platform.

Despite experiencing regulatory scrutiny in the U.S. and other regions, the company’s biggest markets are in the U.S., Europe, Brazil and Southeast Asia.
