Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's robotaxi fleet in Austin, Texas, is anticipated to approximately double in December. Musk made this statement in a post on X, the social media platform he also owns.

Tesla first launched its self-driving service in Austin in June. The exact number of robotaxis currently operated by the organisation remains unclear.

The robotaxi service is presently active in two cities: Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. Vehicles in these locations still require safety monitors to be present.

Musk previously stated in October that he expected robotaxis to operate without safety drivers in significant parts of Austin this year. He also projected operations in eight to ten metropolitan areas by the year's end.
In July, Musk indicated that he expected Tesla robotaxis to serve about half of the U.S. population by year-end. These goals were stated by Musk for the autonomous driving sector.
The robotaxi industry has recently seen a resurgence, with Tesla, Alphabet's Waymo, and Amazon's Zoox accelerating their expansion efforts. This rebound follows years of setbacks, including company closures due to high costs, strict regulations, and federal investigations.
