Tencent, the tech giant behind China's largest messaging app Weixin, has announced a partnership with DeepSeek, an artificial intelligence startup, to enhance its search capabilities. Weixin is currently conducting a beta test to integrate DeepSeek's AI model into its platform, allowing select users to experience the new search feature. This move signifies Tencent's commitment to advancing AI technology and staying competitive in the tech industry.

Weixin's spokesperson revealed that the app utilises Tencent's proprietary Hunyuan large language model to enhance its AI search functionality. Additionally, Tencent is exploring the integration of DeepSeek across various products, such as Tencent Cloud AI Code Assistant and Tencent Yuanbao, further expanding the reach of AI technology within its ecosystem.

Notably, DeepSeek's AI assistant has gained significant traction in the market, surpassing competitors like ChatGPT in downloads from Apple's App Store. This success has attracted the interest of other Chinese companies, including automaker Great Wall Motor and major telecom providers, who are incorporating DeepSeek's AI model into their services to leverage its innovative capabilities.

In a parallel development, Baidu, a prominent Chinese search engine, has also announced plans to integrate DeepSeek's AI technology along with its proprietary Ernie large language model into its search engine. This strategic move underscores the growing trend of tech companies partnering with AI startups to enhance their offerings and provide users with more advanced features.

While Weixin is currently testing DeepSeek for its domestic users, it is worth noting that its sister app, WeChat, which caters to overseas users, is not part of the current integration. However, the combined user base of both apps stood at an impressive 1.38 billion by the end of September, highlighting the vast potential impact of these AI advancements on a global scale.
