Tencent has launched a new artificial intelligence model, Hunyuan Turbo S, which it says can respond to queries faster than DeepSeek's R1. The announcement on Thursday highlights growing competition among Chinese tech firms in the AI sector.

According to Tencent, Turbo S can generate replies within a second, unlike DeepSeek R1 and other models that require more processing time before responding. The company also stated that Turbo S performs on par with DeepSeek-V3 in areas such as knowledge, mathematics, and reasoning.

DeepSeek-V3 powers DeepSeek’s AI chatbot, which has surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT in app store downloads. The success of DeepSeek’s AI models has intensified competition among Chinese tech giants, prompting companies like Tencent to accelerate AI development.

The rise of DeepSeek’s models, which have gained recognition in Silicon Valley, has pushed firms such as Tencent to release new AI versions. These efforts follow the emergence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022, which spurred AI advancements worldwide.

Last month, Alibaba introduced its Qwen 2.5-Max model, claiming it outperforms DeepSeek-V3. The release came shortly after DeepSeek-R1 disrupted the global AI landscape and contributed to an AI stock sell-off outside China.

Tencent also noted that Turbo S has significantly lower usage costs than its previous models. The company attributed this to DeepSeek’s open-source and low-pricing strategy, which has pressured other Chinese AI firms to reduce their pricing.
