Tencent, NetEase Stress 'Social Values' in Games Amid Regulatory Crackdown
Updated: Jan 5
In response to increased regulatory scrutiny and concerns over video game addiction among minors, top Chinese gaming companies Tencent and NetEase have highlighted their commitment to "social values" during an industry gathering in Guangzhou.
The event, hosted by the Game Publishing Committee of the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association, provided an opportunity for these companies to showcase their dedication to social responsibility.
Representatives from Tencent, NetEase and miHoYo, among others, emphasised the incorporation of Chinese cultural elements and a "patriotic spirit" in their games. Su Panhui, a producer for Tencent's League of Legends in China, reiterated the company's mission of "Tech for Good," which aims to make the world a better place.
NetEase's Liu Jie highlighted the inclusion of traditional culture and patriotic values in their titles, such as the popular game Eggy Party.
These efforts align with Beijing's objective to address video game addiction among young people. China has implemented strict regulations, limiting gaming hours for individuals under 18 and requiring a "minor mode" on electronic devices to restrict usage based on age. The Cyberspace Administration of China is set to implement a new rule in January to further curb internet addiction and promote socialist values among children and teenagers.
The gaming industry in China has faced regulatory pressure and economic challenges, leading some companies to scale back their gaming ventures. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, significantly reduced its video game studio Nuverse, while Bilibili, a video streaming platform, has encountered obstacles in its gaming endeavors.
By integrating Chinese culture, geography and social values into their games, Chinese game makers aim to align with government regulations and foster positive experiences for players. These efforts reflect the industry's response to the evolving regulatory landscape and the importance of addressing social concerns surrounding video games.
