Tencent Launches AI Assistant App Yuanbao, Connecting it to WeChat Ecosystem
Tencent launches Yuanbao, an AI assistant app built on the Hunyuan foundation paradigm. Yuanbao provides AI-powered search, summarization, and authoring capabilities. Yuanbao stands out by offering direct access to information from the WeChat ecosystem.
The app is based on Tencent's Hunyuan foundation concept and seeks to provide users a variety of AI-powered features.
Yuanbao includes features like AI-powered search, summaries, and writing capabilities. It can analyse papers and interact with users in response to cues. This independent app represents Tencent's determination to compete directly in the AI assistant industry, which its competitors have already entered. Baidu's ERNIE Bot has garnered 200 million subscribers, while ByteDance's Doubao has more than 26 million monthly active users.
What distinguishes Yuanbao from its competitors is its direct access to material from the WeChat ecosystem. WeChat, which has roughly 1.4 billion monthly active users, has a fan page feature called Official Accounts. This enables individual authors and businesses to distribute content and information exclusively to subscribers, avoiding mainstream search engines such as Baidu. Tencent believes that by integrating with WeChat, Yuanbao will have an advantage in terms of content timeliness and richness.
Tencent's Hunyuan big model, which Yuanbao is based on, has undergone considerable changes since its inception in September 2023. The parameter scale has risen from hundreds of billions to trillions, while the pre-training corpus has grown to 70 trillion tokens. This ensures that Yuanbao provides users with accurate and complete AI help.
Currently, the consumer-oriented Yuanbao app offers a number of AI agents that are similar to GPTs. Users can choose multiple agents for a variety of tasks, such as English practice, everyday life translation, and avatar production.
Tencent recently stated that the basic version of its Hunyuan model is now free, while the more powerful version's pricing has been dropped by 50%, or 87.5%. This move comes as big Chinese tech companies compete for users by offering lower prices.
