StarHub Suffers Disruption On The Final Weekend Of English Premier League
StarHub has drawn the ire of Singaporean football fans after it suffered an outage during the hotly anticipated final weekend of the English Premier League (EPL). With many customers of the Singaporean broadcaster taking to social media to report and air their grievances about the sudden disruption.
DownDetector, an online aggregator providing real-time information about the status of websites and services, found that a lot of the reports started coming in at around 11:30pm on Sunday, 28 May, during the kickoff time for the 10 scheduled matches, it then spiked to more than 2,400 reports at about 11:37pm, according to Channel News Asia.
Up to 87% of the viewers reported issues concerning TV streaming.
"The whole island is having issues, be it streaming or set-top box. Just take a look at their Facebook wall," wrote one user on Reddit, referring to how StarHub's social media pages were flooded with complaints during the outage. There were customers demanding refunds, angry that they weren't able to enjoy what they paid for. Others, meanwhile, voiced their displeasure for the company's customer service, noting how it wasn't very helpful in resolving the issue.
Another Reddit user said he was asked to update his app and reboot his machine, which he did to no avail.
Customers reported that StarHub TV+'s website, set-top box and app all suffered an outage at the start of the final round of fixtures, but they were later restored.
When asked about the disruption, StarHub told CNA the "service difficulty originated from a satellite transmission issue on several HubPremier Channels". The company apologised for the disruption and noted that it restored the Premier+ service before midnight.
StarHub holds the broadcast rights to the EPL in Singapore, which were previously held by rival telco Singtel for 12 consecutive years.
