Spotify Technology is rolling out a new messaging feature for both its free and premium subscription tiers, aiming to attract more users and compete in the streaming market.

The feature enables users to chat and share music with people they have previously interacted with on Spotify. It will be available on mobile devices for users aged 16 and older, starting this week in select markets.
Spotify previously offered a similar messaging feature, but removed it in 2017 due to low engagement. The Swedish firm is now relying on the sharp growth in subscribers over the past few years to revive the feature and grab market share.
The company has been focused on boosting margins through price increases while balancing user growth. This occurs amid intensifying competition from rivals such as Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube.
Spotify had 696 million monthly active users in the second quarter. The company is investing in new features as it targets 1 billion, according to a Financial Times report on Sunday.

This investment includes expanding its video content library, including through a partner program that offers monetization options for podcast creators.
