Spotify to Raise Premium Subscription Prices in Select Markets From September
Spotify will increase the monthly price of its premium individual subscription in select markets starting in September, the company announced Monday.
The price will rise to 11.99 euros (USD 13.86) from 10.99 euros in regions including South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific.
Subscribers will receive an email notification about the change over the next month.
The move comes as the Swedish streaming platform aims to improve its profit margins.
Spotify shares rose nearly 8% following the announcement and have gained about 40% so far in 2025.
Previous price hikes, along with cost-cutting measures, helped Spotify achieve its first annual profit for 2024.
Despite a rise in monthly active users and premium subscribers in the second quarter, the company posted a loss due to higher taxes related to employee salaries. This also affected its third-quarter profit forecast.
Spotify has been expanding its video content library through its Partner Program, which supports podcast creators with monetisation tools.
CEO Daniel Ek said the number of creators joining the program has grown, leading to a significant increase in video content on the platform.
The company is also seeing benefits from Apple’s approval of its U.S. app update, which now displays subscription prices and external payment links.
A judge recently barred Apple from charging commission on off-app purchases, a change Ek described as leading to “a very positive uptick” in the U.S.
Ek added that if similar rules are adopted in Europe and the UK, it would benefit Spotify and other app developers.
