Sonos Move Launch: Another Excellent Sonos Product, Made Portable

  1. Sonos’ first portable speaker that can be connected via WiFi and Bluetooth

  2. Excellent sound quality and power

If you think about wireless home sound systems, Sonos will probably be the first name that comes to mind. Previously, the speakers were limited to being placed in the house since Sonos speakers run on a WiFi streaming system. But the all new Sonos Move takes the best qualities of the older Sonos speakers and packs it into a portable form factor. The new speaker allows you to connect via WiFi normally, as well as through Bluetooth, so that you can bring it along for parties, gatherings and more.

We had some hands-on time with the new speaker, and suffice to say we’re thoroughly impressed. The power of the speaker blew us away, with the max volume being even louder than other speakers that cost at least 5x more. With a down-firing tweeter and a mid-woofer, the bass is punchy while the highs are clear.

Sonos has completely revamped their TruePlay technology, allowing the speaker to automatically detect when it’s being moved thanks to a built-in accelerometer. The speaker then adjusts the sound based on the surroundings. We tested this feature out and found that it worked exceptionally well, increasing the volume whenever we moved the speakers against a wall.

There are also two Class-D digital amplifiers inside, with a four far-field microphone array that allows you to use the built-in voice assistants, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. With a battery life of up to 10 hours, the Move is truly portable. That is, if you can get over the weight of 3kg.

Personally, I found it to be a non-issue. Sonos isn’t touting this as a speaker that you can carry on hiking trips and the likes. The speaker is meant to be sitting near the pool while you swim, at the barbecue pit or at gatherings and I can confidently say that it won’t disappoint in that regard.

The Sonos Move (S$729) is currently on pre-order from Harvey Norman, Challenger, Courts and trysonos.sg and will be available starting 25 September 2019. Stay tuned for our full review!
