Social Media Platform X to Launch Video and Audio Calls, Says Elon Musk
Updated: Jan 8
Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is set to introduce video and audio calls as part of its expansion plans. Owner Elon Musk aims to create an "everything app" to stay ahead of competition from Meta Platforms-owned Threads.
According to Musk's post on X, users will not require a phone number to access these features, which will be available on Apple's iOS, Google's Android and personal computers. However, Musk did not provide a specific timeline for the launch.
Since rebranding Twitter as X, Musk has expressed his intention to transform the platform into a super app that offers various services, including messaging, social networking and peer-to-peer payments.
This vision is reminiscent of Tencent's WeChat app, which has become an integral part of daily life in China.
Musk, who remains actively involved in product development at X despite appointing a new CEO in May, is also seeking to change how news links appear on the platform. This move could potentially impact the reach of news publishers.
