Social Media Giant X Restored After Global Outage

In a major disruption to social media users worldwide, social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced a global outage on December 21.

However, the platform was restored early Thursday, bringing relief to millions of users. During the peak of the outage, over 77,000 users in the United States faced issues accessing the platform.

The outage was not limited to the United States, as users in Canada, Britain, France and other countries also reported difficulties accessing both X and X Pro, previously known as TweetDeck. Downdetector, a platform that tracks outages by collecting status reports from users, recorded over 7,000 users in Canada and Britain experiencing issues with the platform.

The cause of the outage, which began around 12 am ET (0500 GMT), remains unknown. Emails sent to X's communications and support teams bounced back, indicating a lack of clarity regarding the situation. Users on X, which is owned by billionaire Elon Musk, encountered problems such as an inability to view posts and receiving a "Welcome to X!" message. X Pro users, on the other hand, faced a message that said "Waiting for posts."

The outage comes amidst a period of upheaval and uncertainty for the social media platform following Elon Musk's acquisition of X for $44 billion. The acquisition led to layoffs, including numerous engineers responsible for fixing and preventing service outages, according to sources.

During the outage, users turned to rival Meta's app, Threads, to discuss the disruption. They cited difficulties in accessing posts, replies and profiles on X.

As the platform is now back up and running, users can once again engage with their followers, share updates and participate in the vibrant online conversations that X offers. The restoration of the platform brings relief to individuals, businesses and organisations that heavily rely on X for communication, news dissemination and social interaction.

In conclusion, the global outage experienced by social media platform X caused inconvenience and frustration for users worldwide. However, the platform has been successfully restored, allowing users to resume their online activities. The cause of the outage remains unknown, but the incident highlights the importance of reliable and stable social media platforms in today's interconnected world.
