Singapore Military Explores Quantum Computing for Operations

Singapore's military is evaluating quantum computers to refine mission planning, potentially involving unmanned drones for identifying hostile forces. According to the Straits Times, a collaboration has been established between technology firm IBM, the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) Digital and Intelligence Service (DIS), and the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) to advance this initiative.

The joint effort also identifies other potential uses for quantum technology. These include optimising the routes of supply trucks and fuel bowsers. The aim is to complete resupply missions efficiently, ensuring the shortest possible delivery times. As part of this arrangement, both DIS and DSTA will cultivate internal quantum computing expertise and gain access to IBM's quantum computing resources.


Military Expert 7 Guo Jinghua, commander of SAF's C4 and Digitalisation Command, stated that there is a significant advantage for national security in understanding quantum computing. But he noted the technology remains nascent, with practical utility and clear benefits still some years away. Such advanced systems are expected to lead new discoveries in areas like encryption, medical science, and more complex artificial intelligence.


Quantum computers are generally considered more powerful than conventional machines. They can process and examine a vast number of possibilities to pinpoint a likely solution within hours. Traditional computers, by contrast, might require hundreds or even thousands of years to complete the same analytical task. This fundamental difference in processing capability is central to their potential appeal for complex defence calculations.


Commander Guo emphasised the necessity of developing internal capabilities. He stated that within the defence sector, a dedicated group of engineers and devs must possess a clear understanding of quantum computing principles, algorithms, and the associated programming frameworks. This focus on building foundational knowledge is a key component of the current collaboration.


Experts predict that quantum computers will reliably execute complex algorithms and self-correct any hardware errors by 2030. And Commander Guo affirmed the importance of commencing work now to closely monitor the technology's progress. He was speaking during IBM Think Singapore, the Big Tech firm's annual conference attended by various industry leaders, policymakers, and analysts.


Logistics presents a particularly complex challenge within defence operations. Commander Guo offered an illustration, explaining that distributing supplies with only 20 trucks across 50 distinct locations generates a quintillion possible route combinations. Each additional variable introduced into such a scenario dramatically increases the problem's complexity, meaning classical computers would take considerably longer to identify the optimal path.


Beyond military applications, other sectors in Singapore are also exploring quantum computing. Ports and banks are among those looking to harness this technology. Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo highlighted its relevance in port logistics, where millions of container movements occur annually.


So, efficiently stacking containers upon unloading from one vessel, whether at level two or level eight, makes a tangible difference. Effective stacking could significantly reduce the work required to reload containers onto subsequent vessels. But these calculations involve extreme complexity, requiring advanced computational methods.


In the financial sector, OCBC Bank has been working with local universities on specific applications. The bank uses quantum algorithms and computers to improve fraud detection, execute derivative pricing, and strengthen cryptography systems. These efforts aim to enhance security and efficiency in financial transactions.


Ana Paula Assis, senior vice president for IBM Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific, stated that quantum computing can also accelerate the creation of artificial intelligence models. She clarified that quantum technologies and AI are not competing, but rather convergent. This perspective suggests a synergistic relationship between the two fields.


Quantum computers reveal new information, such as the interactions of molecules and the properties of novel materials. They can also analyse various financial outcomes with speed and precision. Subsequently, artificial intelligence models can learn from this expanded knowledge base, thereby creating a powerful feedback loop. Paula Assis described this process as a "powerful flywheel."
