Singapore Engages with Australia on Social Media Ban for Young Users
Singapore is in discussions with Australia regarding the implementation of age restrictions on social media platforms. Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Rahayu Mahzam revealed in Parliament on Jan 7 that Singapore shares Australia's objectives in safeguarding young individuals online.
Australia recently passed a stringent law prohibiting children under 16 from accessing social media, marking one of the toughest measures globally to combat online harms. While the specifics of enforcing this law in 2025 remain unclear, Singaporean MPs have raised questions about the possibility of similar regulations in Singapore to enhance the safety of children and teenagers on social media platforms.
Addressing concerns, Ms. Foo Mee Har from West Coast GRC queried the government on the effectiveness of such bans in shielding young users from online dangers. In response, Ms. Rahayu emphasised the common goal of protecting children and youth from online risks through legislating age restrictions on social media access. She affirmed that Singapore will assess the efficacy of imposing age limits moving forward.
Ms. Rahayu highlighted the importance of evaluating various factors before considering a ban, including how authorities will measure violations by young users and how to manage the transition to unregulated platforms. The discussions with Australia and insights from social media platforms will play a crucial role in shaping Singapore's approach to safeguarding young individuals online.
