Samsung Electronics launched thinner, lighter foldable smartphones on Wednesday, aiming to reclaim its position in the premium smartphone market and counter rising competition from Chinese brands.

The South Korean tech giant is targeting the high-end segment, where Apple has yet to release a foldable device. Samsung lost its global smartphone lead to Apple in 2023 and now faces increasing pressure from Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei and Honor.
The new foldables are part of Samsung’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into its mobile devices. Choi Won-joon, Samsung’s mobile president and chief operating officer, said his top priority is to establish Samsung as a leader in AI-powered smartphones.

“I believe that foldable phones, integrated with AI features, are ready to become mainstream by offering unique, differentiated experience,” Choi said in his first media interview since his promotion in March.
Samsung plans to strengthen its AI capabilities through partnerships with external companies like Google. This contrasts with Apple’s approach of relying on in-house AI development, which has experienced delays in rolling out key features.
In addition to the foldable phones, Samsung introduced its first smartwatches featuring Google’s AI voice assistant, Gemini. The assistant can offer personalised suggestions, such as recommending running routes.
Samsung’s chip division, a core part of its business, has recently seen profits decline, partly due to delays in supplying AI chips to Nvidia.
