Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Still Functional After Almost Two Months Submerged in River
Updated: Dec 18, 2023
While the majority of today's smartphones are only water-resistant instead of waterproof, there are models that can apparently survive being submerged underwater for extended periods of time.
One TikToker found a working Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra while scuba diving a popular river. TikToker Man + River shared clips from his dive where he found the premium smartphone on the popular short-form video app. He said the smartphone at first wouldn't turn on. After several months, however, he tried it again using a new USB Power Delivery (PD) charger he just bought and it did the trick. Man + River then popped the SIM card out to get the contact information of the original owner and called him on FaceTime.
The original owner was in disbelief when the TikToker told him during the call that his Galaxy S22 Ultra was found and in working condition no less. "There's no way it works," said the original owner, who confirmed to the TikToker that he lost the smartphone a year before their call. The smartphone has supposedly been submerged in the river for close to two months before it was recovered.
One of Samsung's official TikTok accounts, @SamsungUK, saw Man + River's video and commented, "A super phone". That comment has perhaps led some of the Man+ River's followers to ask whether the video is sponsored by the South Korean electronics giant – to which the TikToker clarified that it isn't. Still, some viewers think the video should be a commercial for the water-resistant capabilities of the smartphone.
Smartphones aren't usually designed to be waterproof, as mentioned previously. They're only water-resistant, meaning there's a limit to how deep and how long they can be submerged in water before any of the internal components get damaged. As to how the Galaxy S22 Ultra in the video survived being underwater that long is unclear.
Just a few months ago, a fully functioning iPhone 12 was reportedly found by a group of scuba divers in Madison, Wisconsin, U.S. The smartphone had been underwater for close to a year, but exhibited no signs of damage or malfunction.
