The Indian army showcased rifle-mounted robotic dogs during rehearsals for the Republic Day parade in New Delhi. These four-legged machines, built for navigating rough ground, garnered significant attention from onlookers and defence experts.

A video of these quadrupedal robots marching alongside troops and armoured vehicles at Kartavya Path is circulating widely on social media. The robots, resembling mechanical dogs with rifles on their backs, were seen moving in formation.

Some robots demonstrated agile movements, such as stepping and balancing, with military vehicles and personnel visible in the background. This brief glimpse signals a new technological advancement for the Indian armed forces.

The same type of quadruped robot has been previously used as a roaming camera on cricket fields during the IPL. However, integrated weapon systems on robotic dogs have been tested by other militaries and private companies globally.

Such tests have occurred in the US, China, and in videos released by Kyiv during the ongoing Ukraine War. The operational effectiveness and battlefield survivability of these unmanned ground vehicles remain under evaluation.

The army has already inducted 100 robotic mules, formally known as Multi Utility Legged Equipment, into active service. These machines are designed to carry gear, move with troops, and operate in places where vehicles struggle, especially in high-risk zones where human movement is limited.

This move is part of a broader push towards automation and unmanned systems within the Indian army. It suggests that the future of Indian ground warfare may involve four-legged machines.

India will mark its 77th Republic Day this year. The occasion commemorates Jan. 26, 1950, when the Constitution came into force, formally establishing the country as a sovereign republic.

This year’s celebrations will also observe 150 years of Vande Mataram, the national song that served as a rallying cry during the freedom struggle.
