The cyclotron, which is housed in Castle Hill Hospital's new Molecular Imaging Research Centre near Cottingham, produces particles or radiotracers that are critical for detecting conditions such as cancer, Alzheimer's, heart, and liver disease.

Prof Nick Stafford, the founder of the Daisy Appeal, which helped fund the £9 million centre, emphasised the facility's uniqueness, claiming it is the only one of its kind in northern England. He emphasised the importance of early diagnosis and accurate detection, especially for patients who currently must travel to London for such services.

The installation of this cutting-edge cyclotron in East Yorkshire represents a significant milestone in medical technology for the region. Prof Stafford emphasised the importance of technology in providing precise disease detection and early diagnosis, which can have a significant impact on treatment outcomes, particularly in cancer cases.

Similar medical facilities using this advanced technology are already operational in major UK cities such as London, Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. Despite the cyclotron's planned installation in 2022, the project was delayed due to the pandemic, with the official handover scheduled for this Friday.

Following handover, the focus will shift to testing, commissioning, and licensing procedures, with the first radiotracers expected to be produced in early 2025. Prof Stafford emphasised the critical role of early detection in increasing the likelihood of successful cancer treatment, highlighting the significance of this groundbreaking technology in the fight against the disease.
