Realme 7 Pro Review: One of the Best Midrange Phones in 2020

We’ve seen quite a few great midrange phones in 2020, like the Google Pixel 4a, Huawei Nova 7 SE and more. 2020 truly has been the year where midrange phones shine, and the new realme 7 Pro is yet another excellent addition to the lineup.

We only get the realme 7 Pro in Singapore, but I think it works out pretty well since it comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which is definitely on the high end when it comes to midrange phones. You also get a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display, which is a step up from LCD displays used by the previous gen.

The phone is relatively fast and it’s powered by the Snapdragon 720G. It’s not the newest or the fastest chip, but it works decently in combination with the 8GB of RAM to make sure the phone never felt sluggish or slow when I was using it.

There’s actually a pretty annoying feature in the OS though, and you might notice it if you use the built-in music or video players. You get ads popping up, and while I’m not happy about it at all, I can somewhat understand it from a business’ point of view. Regardless, there’s an option to turn it off by going into Additional Settings -> Get Recommendations.

The display gets pretty bright, and colour reproduction is nice. I do quite like watching videos and playing games on it. The downside is that it only has a 60Hz refresh rate, but considering the price, I’ll let it slide.

The back of the phone is made of plastic, which doesn’t feel all that premium, although I do like the line along the back that makes it a bit more visually interesting than a solid blue back. The power button has a pop of gold as well, which is nice.

You get a quad-camera array on the back, with a 64MP main camera, 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor. Photos taken with the phone were actually better than I expected, with excellent detail and pretty accurate colours.

I tried out the macro lens, but as usual, I just recommend using the main lens and zooming in to 2x or something instead. You can tell the colours aren’t as vibrant with the macro lens.

The phone has a 4,500mAh battery inside, which is enough for a day of moderate usage, but I’m stunned that realme has included 65W fast charging, or SuperDart charging as they call it. It’s a feature that’s more common on high-end phones, and to see it included in the box as well as in a midrange phone is definitely a huge plus.

All in all, the realme 7 Pro isn’t premium by any stretch of the imagination, but for the price point, this phone is packed with plenty of features, and the 65W fast charging is definitely something that most people wouldn’t expect to get out of a budget phone. If you’re looking for an affordable Android phone that has snappy performance, really quick battery charging and excellent photo quality, this is a great phone to consider.
